About this Event
WINTER SPRING 2026 SESSION : FEBRUARY 1 7- MARCH 27 (6 WEEKS)*
*Please note, the first class will meet during Week 2 of the session to avoid the President’s Day Holiday on Monday, February 16, therefore this course will meet for 5 weeks.
INTRO TO PERCUSSION
In this introductory course, students will start learning the history of instruments and their parts, technique, and basic rhythmic sight-reading of the rich and complex world of Latin percussion. Instruments that will be introduced include congas, bongos, timbales, claves, cowbell, maracas (shakers), and güiro.
The study of time signature and time recognition, as well as detailed listening and ear training will also be introduced. Students will begin to learn and read written notes with the goal of applying them, or performing, basic Latin rhythms. This class will follow a fundamental introduction to the Percussive Arts Society International Drum Rudiments. We hope you will enjoy this introductory exploration of Latin percussion!
This weekly class is designed for students ages 8 to 21 with no prior experience.
Intro to Percussion is taught by LHYAC Teaching Artist, Pablo Leñero (Mr. Pablo). All classes have an adult support staff assistant in addition to the lead Teaching Artist to help ensure the best experience possible for everyone.
Students will meet twice weekly at the Lincoln Heights Youth Arts Center, in Room 212, on Mondays from 4:30 pm - 5:20 pm.
Please Save the Date for the final date of class, Monday, March 23, which will include an in-class demonstration as part of the Center’s Open House Week. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend this informal celebration marking your student’s achievements!
