LGBTQ Youth Allyship → Session 1: Include + Listen and Notice

Join us for brunch, fun, and learning at Freedom Forward’s HYPE Center, 198 Potrero Ave!

The purpose of this series is to support staff working in DCYF-funded programs in developing allyship skills with their youth and staff to increase feelings of belonging and safety for LGTBQ+ staff and youth program participants. The goal is for cohort participants to walk away feeling more confident in supporting allyship at their sites. 

Each session will include a combination of providing participants with opportunities to learn and share activities and ideas, as well as allowing emergent “problems of practice” to be discussed. 

As with all Spark Decks workshops, this series will focus on the process of innovating new ideas from a “spark” and reflecting and modifying activities each time they are implemented. In this way, learning on-the-job and the continuous quality improvement cycle are embedded into the workshop. Optional 1:1 coaching is also available, for anyone who would like additional support in increasing LGBTQ+ youth-allyship at their sites.

Goal: Through this session, we will model what inclusion will look like in this space (or the ones you create!), and understand how to help ourselves and our youth develop the skills of listening and noticing. 

Objectives: By the end of this session, we will…

• Model the development of allyship-centered LGBTQ+ group agreements and accountability agreements
• Collect ideas for what scenarios and issues participants want to cover in future sessions (what do you want to learn?)
• Understand that listening and noticing is not just with our ears; learn and share tangible ways to be conscientious and see the world through the eyes of our youth
• Leave with “next steps” of resources and things we can try out before we meet again next time

Each participant will receive a copy of the LGBTQ+ Youth Allyship deck and other useful materials.

All workshops are develop with opportunities to cross collaborate, create, learn and share. Please be mindful of workshops being interactive through video, chat or audio responses.
