The theme of theme of the concert is a reflection on suffering, death, and transformation.
The acrostic poem of Jeremiah’s Lamentations featured in the Couperin Leçons de Ténèbres has been famously set many times over the centuries dating back to the 1500s and used in liturgies for the week leading up to Good Friday. The text gives us a great deal to reflect on. Though it is said that Jeremiah’s poem was directed at events dating in the 500s BCE, much of the text might still be considered metaphorically appropriate for today and what happens when we live separately from the qualities of compassion and good will and allow our jealousy, greed, and prejudice to overwhelm our hearts/minds and dictate our actions.
Each section of the lessons (Leçons) ends with a pleading for the people to turn their hearts and minds back to God's love.
The concert will also include “Les Voix Humaines” and other works by Marin Marias and will conclude with the joyful “Motet pour le jour de Paques” by F. Couperin.
