About this Event

Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment

This qualification comprises two units, a knowledge unit and a performance unit. You can only achieve this qualification if you are assessing learners’ occupational competence in a real place of work. As an assessor-trainee, you can be employed or a volunteer, but you must be able to assess at least two learners on at least two occasions for each learner. You must be using, as a minimum, observation, examination of work products and questioning to assess your learners, but you might also be using witness testimony, discussion with the learner, or learner statements. Assessment of the learners must be in person and will be in the learners’ workplace. The workplace can be where the learners are employed, or a work placement for their learning programme.

The Award has a 9-credit value, and you would expect to be assessed through a combination of assessment methods: assignments, examination of work products, questioning, witness testimony, professional discussion and observations of you carrying out assessment activities with your two learners. The Award usually takes 6 – 9 months to achieve.

Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement

This qualification comprises three units, a knowledge unit and two performance units. The first performance unit covers workplace assessment, as described in the Award above, where you would be using observation, work products and oral questions as your main methods to assess at least two learners in their own workplace. The second performance unit is achieved by carrying out assessment of learners in a classroom, training or workshop environment, usually preparing learners for work. For this second practical unit, you must assess at least two learners on two occasions, using a minimum of three methods. These methods can be simulation, skills tests, questioning, assignments, projects and case studies. For the Certificate version therefore, you will need to be actively assessing in both a workplace and a work-related training setting and will need to demonstrate that you are assessing at least four learners, two different learners for each of the performance units.

The Certificate has a 15-credit value, and you would expect to be assessed through a combination of assessment methods: assignments, examination of work products, questioning, witness testimony, professional discussion and observations of you carrying out assessment activities with your four learners. The Certificate usually takes 9 – 12 months to achieve.

Group induction and training day for Autumn term is Wednesday 16 September 2026 and will be delivered at University and Professional Development Centre, West Suffolk College, Bury St Edmunds.
