A Service Provider Training & Community Dialogue
About this Event
This full-day training brings together service providers, health professionals, and community leaders to talk honestly about how anti-Black racism, migration, and systemic barriers affect the mental health of newcomer African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) communities in Peel Region.
The day is rooted in lived experience and frontline practice. It’s designed to help service providers better understand the realities newcomer ACB communities face, while also creating space to reflect on the pressures, gaps, and limits within the systems we work in.
What the day includes
The training is structured around two keynote sessions that build on each other:
Keynote 1: Understanding the Context
This session focuses on how mental health for ACB communities is shaped by racism, migration stress, settlement challenges, and limited access to culturally appropriate care. It looks at the added barriers newcomer ACB individuals face when trying to seek and receive mental health support in Peel Region.
Keynote 2: Practice, Systems, and Provider Wellness
The second keynote shifts to the service provider perspective, exploring equity-based and culturally responsive approaches to care. It also addresses common challenges in the mental health sector, including burnout, workplace wellness, staffing shortages, and limits within existing services.
Participants will also hear from:
- A panel of four speakers with a mix of newcomer lived experience, community-based leadership, and health or social service backgrounds, offering practical insight into what’s working, what’s missing, and what needs to change.
Who this is for
This training is designed for frontline staff, managers, and organizations who support newcomer ACB communities. The focus is on building culturally safe, trauma-informed, and anti-racist approaches that are realistic and applicable to everyday work.
By bringing together community voices and service providers, this day creates space for real conversation — moving beyond theory and toward changes that can actually be put into practice.
