Let's Talk About Vancouver's Identity in Filmmaking to Grow as a Story Setting

Vancouver is a city of a thousand masks: visually, it can stand in for countless other places, but in three decades of film-service work it has given its own identity away.
What do cities like Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, London, Paris, Seattle, Toronto, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dublin, etc. have that Vancouver doesn’t? Each has a distinct identity that makes filmmakers and other creatives want to set stories there.
No one wants to set their story in Vancouver because Vancouver doesn’t stand for anything.
The most recent example of this is one of the most popular Canadian episodic shows getting a lot of buzz right now, "Off Campus". It’s 100% shot in Vancouver and based on books by a Canadian author… but the story is set in Boston?
What would help the future of filmmaking in BC—creatively and financially—is if filmmakers shot more shows in Vancouver and called the city Vancouver.
But perhaps Vancouver is too vanilla—too generic—for people to know what our identity is?
It’s not just about physical locations (i.e. https://www.camclarkfordrichmond.com/blog/what-is-vancouver-known-for/); it’s the SPIRIT and the ESSENCE people associate with different cities.
For example, people associate Washington with diplomacy, intelligence, and leadership—and Singapore with religion and financial capital.
Of course, every city has different sides and layers to it—for instance, both New York and Hong Kong are known for luxurious high society as well as an underbelly of organized crime.
This is a casual get-together and discussion about what Vancouver’s identity (or identities) are—what can be dramatized, put into entertainment, and become what we’re known for.
We’ll kick a few ideas around, and this may become the basis for some future feature film projects.
