Let’s Talk About Art: Elizabeth Catlett

Join us for a two-day exploration of the life and work of Elizabeth Catlett (1915–2012), a groundbreaking sculptor, printmaker, feminist, and lifelong social activist. Through her powerful and compassionate art, Catlett gave voice to the struggles and triumphs of Black and Mexican communities, creating works that continue to inspire movements for justice today.

Our program begins with a virtual talk on Zoom, Wednesday, October 15 at 1:00 pm, where we will dive into Catlett’s artistic legacy and the social and political contexts that shaped her practice. The following afternoon, Thursday, October 16 at 1:30 pm, we will gather in person at the Art Institute of Chicago for a guided tour of Catlett’s first major solo exhibition in the city. Bringing together more than 100 works spanning her remarkable career, this retrospective highlights the bold lines, striking forms, and unflinching social vision that made Catlett one of the most important artists of the 20th century.

Whether through sculpture, prints, or activism, Catlett sought to make art accessible, resonant, and transformative. This special edition of Let’s Talk About Art offers an opportunity to experience her revolutionary work in community with others.
