Contact Improvisation is a rigorous, serious, but also deeply playful study of the body in motion, in contact with other bodies, in constant and changing relation to space and form.
The class is suitable for those new to the form and to those who have been dancing for eons. We learn from each other's mastery as much from each other's total cluelessness.
We practice silence as a discipline that opens the body and psyche to space beyond the chatter of the known.
We practice contact as a way to remember that we are never alone--a fact whose ethical dimensions require that we practice, lest we miss the opportunities the fact of more-than-one-ness presents.
Kristen Lewis leads the class, bringing to the practice 14 years of experience in improvisational dance. She approaches Contact Improvisation through an aesthetic that values discipline, sincerity, humility, not-knowing, curiosity, kindness, and a simple, unadorned relationship to what emerges. All body types and ages are welcome. Professional to amateur to beginner: all welcome. It works.
