Ages 9 - 14 at the Depot Art Center
Class Description: "R-R-R-RrrOOOMMM!" "KA-POW!" This camp is designed to emphasize storytelling through pictures. We'll go over planning the story details, the classic comics layout, and ways to overcome challenges in rendering characters, setting and action in ways that advance the storytelling. Some of the best comics are single panel! Our goal after planning and practicing will be for each camper to produce a very short final product, or the start of something the camper may decide to finish after the camp concludes. We will work together to overcome technical challenges and build confidence in developing and executing each camper's unique artistic vision. Campers are encouraged to bring their favorite story or comic for inspiration, and/or to be thinking of a particular theme or story they'd like to tell in visual form. We'll be sticking to age-appropriate content.

Teacher: Tony Urbick has lived in the valley for over twenty years and is a proud father to his six year old, with whom he's been making some cool stories and artworks. Not a professionally trained artist, he's been drawing since his son's current age, and works in many different media (but is not at all famous yet). His goal is to help kids tell their story and give the tools to jump over the technical hurdles with layout, story writing, character development and drawing to let young minds discover and grow their artistic problem-solving skills.
