Join Fayetteville Freedom For All for a community teach-in with local historian, Joel Cook. This is a free event and light refreshments will be provided. After their emancipation in the Civil War, Black Americans found themselves confronted by intense backlash from white supremacists all over the country. They were terrorized by gangs, barred from communal spaces, and denied access to resources in the hopes that they would eventually die out.
But they didn't. Instead, Black Americans organized together, creating their own infrastructure for fellowship, physical protection, healthcare, and wealth among other things. These benevolent societies, as they were known, helped sustain Black communities through the dark times of Jim Crow and provided structure to the Civil Rights Movement that freed them once again.
As many Americans contemplate the loss of civil rights and other protections today, those previous generations provide a model for what we can do to keep us safe and make it sustainable for now and future generations to come.
