Please join us in discovering the lives and stories of Louisiana's brave Free Men of Color and Native Americans who fought with honor in the Revolutionary War and the Battle of New Orleans of the War of 1812 and helped propel the United States to victory! Revel in the marvelouse music of the 19th century Gens de Couleur Libres Créole Classical Composers.
Guest Speaker:
Mister Jari C. Honora, a Certified Genealogist® and Historian specializing in Louisiana’s legacy is a New Orleans native & resident and proud Louisiana Créole with roots dating back more than two centuries along Bayou Lafourche and the German-Acadian Coast He has two decades of experience researching families, institutions, and history in south Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. Mister Honora is a graduate of Tulane University and works as a Reference Associate in the Williams Research Center of the Historic New Orleans Collection. He does historical and genealogical research professionally, including work for the TV programs Finding Your Roots and We’ll Meet Again, and the Georgetown Memory Project. He has presented at numerous historical and genealogical conferences and is a contributor to the CreoleGen blog. Mister Honora will discuss the intriguing details of how les Gens de Couleur Libres troops helped lead the United States to victory in the Revolutionary War and the Battle of New Orleans of the War of 1812. He will illuminate the fascinating history of their trials, bravery, honorable service, and contributions to American victory. The ultra talented, internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Givonna Joseph of Opera Créole and NOSFA's own songbirds Les Demoiselles Borne Curran will lend their talents to the celebration.

As Founder and Artistic Director of the award-winning Opera Créole, Givonna Joseph’s research on 19th-century New Orleans free classical and operatic composers of color and Creole history and heritage was recently featured on NBC Nightly News, NPR, and in the magazines Black Enterprise, 64 Parishes, and Atlas Obscura. revious cover articles include BreakThru Media Magazine and NOLA Boomers magazine. Since 2011, the international soloist, arts integration specialist, and university lecturer, along with her daughter, Aria Mason, Opera Créole co-founder, has received several honors for mounting lost or rarely heard operas by composers of color. In 2o22, Ms. Joseph received The Torchbearers Award from The New Orleans Regional Chapter of The National Coalition of 100 Black Women. The former Education Director for the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra was most recently featured in educational documentaries, including Songs of Slavery and Emancipation, Dillard University's Ray Charles Center for Material Culture's Legacy of American Slavery, and The Nous Foundation’s Voices of Renewal, celebrating the Creole language. Ms. Joseph is a graduate of Loyola University of New Orleans where she teaches the class Opera, Classical Music, and Race and gives back to several organizations such as The Council of French Societies, The Symphony Chorus, The Black Administrators of Opera, and Opera America.. Givonna Joseph will share a brief history of Mr. Edmond Dédé, the 19th century Gens de Couleur composer of the opera Margiane, and delight us with selections of his once lost masterpiece ahead of Opera Créole’s much anticipated world premiere of the same at the Lincoln Theater in Washington D.C. La Demoiselle Camille Rosalie Evangeline Borne Curran (Cami Rose) is a r junior and Highest Honors Scholar at the Academy of the Sacred Heart. She is a Junior Member of the New Orleans Spring Fiesta Association and a frequent volunteer in service to the organization. La Demoiselle Curran developed and moderates the NOSFA/ASH Cooperative Student Service Hour Program. As a service to our community, She is developing a video series honoring the many communities which have contributed to our rich Louisiana history and culture. She serves as the Lieutenant of the ASH Dance team and is the representative for the Academy of the Sacred Heart New Orleans on the Network Student Advisory Committee of the International Network of Sacred Heart Schools. Cami Rose has studied dance, voice, and acting since age two. La Demoiselle Curran has performed in many productions and plans to major in Musical Theater at university. Cami Rose attended the prestigious and competitive IPAI (International Performing Arts Institute) to study Musical Theater in Germany.

La Demoiselle Cécile Rose Valentine Borne Curran (Céci) is a Highest Honors Scholar graduate of the Academy of the Sacred Heart. She is a sophomore at Catholic University of America, where she is a Philosophy and English Cornerstone Honor Student, and recipient of the Cornerstone Scholarship. La Demoiselle Curran is a Junior Member of the New Orleans Spring Fiesta Association and is a frequent volunteer in service to the organization. As a service to our community, Céci developed a video series, Self-Care with Céci, a mental heath awareness and self help campaign targeting adolescent girls and young women. Together with her siblings, Liam and Cami Rose, Céci is developing a nonprofit concert series to benefit schools and organizations which serve differently learning, mentally ill, and disenfranchised youth. Céci has studied dance, voice, and acting since age two. La Demoiselle Curran has performed in many productions and is majoring in Musical Theater with a minor in Music. She attended the prestigious and competitive IPAI(International Performing Arts Institute) to study Musical Theater in Germany.
