France and Australia have had a deep relationship for over a century in film. The Lumière Brothers sent one of their representatives to present their “Cinématographe” in 1896 and filmed in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. The first co-production treaty Australia signed was with France some decades ago and the annual Alliance Française French Film Festival is the largest French cinema event outside of France! What is it about French cinema therefore that continues to fascinate Australian audiences?
Former Director of the Melbourne International Film Festival - and dual citizen - James Hewison has undertaken a substantial research project to explore and interrogate this allure of French cinema and will be joined in the discussion by eminent film critic and
francophile Philippa Hawker.

This Les Lumières event is being held as part of the 2026 Bastille Day French Festival.
Let's meet under The Eiffel Tower! The Bastille Day French Festival returns to the iconic Queen Victoria Market Sheds C & D on Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th July.
Walk into a wintry French town square right in the heart of Melbourne.
