About this Event
When we think of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, our mind inevitably turns to such works as the Mona Lisa and the Sistine Chapel, but there are two scenes by these artists that, although less well-known today, caused a sensation in the early 16th century and influenced artists for decades. These are The Battle of Anghiari and The Battle of Cascina, each intended to commemorate an important Florentine victory. While the frescoes were never actually completed, the surviving preparatory studies and copies made after their designs demonstrate the remarkable skill and creative processes employed by these two Renaissance giants.
In this lecture, we will be considering the cultural, political and artistic climate of early 16th-century Florence, the sources of inspiration behind these two stunning battle scenes, and how Leonardo and Michelangelo were pitted against each other on a very grand, very public stage.
Tickets: $25 (includes a selection of non-alcoholic beverages)
