Joshua Sobel is an organist, harpsichordist, and pianist from North Carolina. Born in 2001, he has been playing piano since 2004 and organ since 2010. He placed first at the 2017 Cooper-Miller competition and the 2020 UNCSA competition, and has been praised in "The American Organist" for his "ease and confidence at the keyboard." He continued his organ studies with Dr. Timothy Olsen at UNC School of the Arts and currently serves as Organist at Centenary UMC in Winston-Salem, NC.
Joshua has played a wide range of repertoire in numerous churches and halls across the United States and abroad, including Edenton Street Methodist church, Nativity Episcopal Church, and Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh; the Tannenberg organ in Old Salem; Kallio Church in Helsinki, Finland; Dunfermline Abbey in Scotland; the Wanamaker store in Philadelphia; and several others. He has studied previously with several notable organists, including Mark Andersen, a former student of Marcel Dupré.
Apart from organ repertoire, Joshua has specific interests in improvisation, historical performance practice, conducting, and recording engineering. His current projects include research into little-known but historically important organists and composers, and modern and historic recording techniques. In late spring of 2026, he will join St. John's Abbey Organ Builders in Collegeville, MN, where he will assist renowned organ builders Martin Pasi and Christian Metzler in the construction of new pipe organs for churches all across the country.
