Leisure for Life: Living Well, Never Gets Old

The AUT Centre for Active Ageing is teaming up with the Never 2 Old Research Cluster to deliver a free Half-Day Hui for Aucklanders involved in the production and consumption of sport and active recreation at a community level.

Our target audience are full-time and part-time sport and leisure clubs administrators, amatuer athletes, sport and recreation business owners, coaches and development officers, sport and lifestyle entrepreneurs, club and team managers, (grand)parents, PT's, sport physio's, community sport programme leaders, policy makers, scholars and researchers, umpires/referees, club volunteers etc... Essentially, anyone whose lives and livelihoods is directly impacted by sport and recreation.

The event follows the conversations which started with health care practitioners and older adults at the 2022 Auckland Age Friendly Symposium and continued last year with leisure studies and gerontologist scholars from over 20 nations at the ANZALS 30th Anniversary 'Leisure for Life' Conference.

There will be three engaging, thought-provoking sessions, plus refreshments and networking opportunities.

Session 1: ‘Ageing in an Active City’ - a korero with those tasked with getting more adults, more active, more often, and turning the city of sails into the world's most active city, including the funders and facilitators of community programmes/initiatives. A panel session focused on the fundamental role played by older adults in the production and consumption of play, active recreation and sport.

Session 2: ‘Playing to the final whistle’ - a korero with members of the AUT Centre for Active Ageing, and their research collaborators, including those undertaking studies which focuses on the importance of breaking stigma attached to ageing, and the importance of connecting generations through the creation of sustainable age-friendly environments, and the power of play.

Session 3: ‘Use it or Lose it’ - a fun, age-friendly activity-based session run by Professor Ngaire Kerse, focusing on the importance of movement for mental, social and physical health.
