Legends & Language is an 8-week fantasy role-playing social adventure for kids ages 8–12 and their parents. Guided by a licensed Speech-Lang
About this Event

Absolutely — this is important. Many parents hear “fantasy role-playing game” and either feel confused or unsure how it connects to therapy.

Here is a clear, reassuring, parent-friendly overview you can use for Eventbrite, your website, or as a PDF handout.

What Is This Group All About?

Legends & Language is a small-group social communication program where children and parents build a story together through guided fantasy adventure.

If you’ve never heard of tabletop role-playing games before, here’s a simple way to think about it:

It’s collaborative storytelling with structure.

Children create characters (like heroes in a book), and together the group goes on an imaginary adventure. They solve problems, talk through challenges, negotiate plans, and respond to unexpected twists — all guided by a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist.

There are no video screens.
There is no acting experience required.
There is no prior game knowledge needed.

Just imagination and conversation.

What Is Dungeons & Dragons?

Dungeons & Dragons (often called D&D) is a storytelling game that has been around for decades. Players create characters and work together to solve problems inside an imaginary world.

Think of it like:

  • A group-written novel
  • Improvisational storytelling
  • Cooperative problem-solving
  • A social board game without a board

In our program, we use a simplified, therapy-adapted version of this format designed specifically to support communication development.

It is structured, supportive, and guided by a professional — not an open-ended free-for-all.

How Does This Help Speech & Language?

This format naturally builds communication skills because children must use language to:

✔️ Describe their ideas
✔️ Explain their thinking
✔️ Ask questions
✔️ Solve problems out loud
✔️ Take turns speaking
✔️ Negotiate plans
✔️ Interpret social cues
✔️ Express emotions
✔️ Repair misunderstandings

Every part of the adventure requires real-time communication.

Instead of practicing skills in isolation, children use language with purpose.

What Skills Are We Targeting?
🗣 Speech & Language Development
  • Narrative structure (beginning, middle, end)
  • Vocabulary expansion
  • Descriptive language
  • Perspective-taking
  • Inferencing
  • Problem-solving language
  • Sequencing
  • Pragmatic language (social communication)

🧠 Social-Emotional Skills
  • Turn-taking
  • Flexible thinking
  • Emotional regulation
  • Handling disappointment
  • Collaboration
  • Self-advocacy
  • Reading social cues
Why Include Parents?

Parents are included intentionally.

When caregivers participate:

  • They see how to scaffold communication
  • They learn supportive language prompts
  • They strengthen connection through shared play
  • Skills transfer more easily to home life

You are not there to “manage behavior.”
You are there to co-adventure.

What If My Child Is Shy?

This format actually works beautifully for children who are hesitant to speak.

Why?

Because:

  • They are speaking as a character (which feels safer)
  • The story gives them something concrete to talk about
  • There is a predictable turn-taking structure
  • The therapist gently supports participation
  • Drawing, gestures, and alternative communication methods are welcomed

There is no pressure to perform.

What If My Child Has ADHD, Autism, or Social Challenges?

This program is neurodiversity-affirming and designed specifically for children who may:

  • Struggle with flexible thinking
  • Have difficulty with peer interaction
  • Become frustrated easily
  • Need support with conversational reciprocity
  • Prefer structured interactions
  • Thrive with imaginative play

We scaffold the environment to support regulation and success.

Is This Just Playing a Game?

It may look like play — but it is purposeful, structured therapeutic play.

Each session includes:

  1. A communication mini-lesson
  2. Guided adventure time
  3. Facilitated reflection and skill connection
  4. Parent coaching moments

The fantasy theme increases motivation.
The therapist ensures skill development.

What Makes This Different from a Typical Social Skills Group?

Many traditional social skills groups:

  • Use scripted conversations
  • Practice skills in isolation
  • Feel artificial

This program:

  • Builds skills inside a shared story
  • Encourages authentic interaction
  • Provides natural reasons to communicate
  • Makes problem-solving meaningful
  • Increases buy-in and confidence

Children don’t feel like they’re being “worked on.”
They feel like heroes on a quest.

What Outcomes Can Families Expect?

By the end of the program, many families report:

  • Increased confidence speaking in groups
  • Improved narrative organization
  • Better flexibility during conflict
  • More emotional awareness
  • Stronger parent-child connection
  • Greater willingness to participate socially
Who Is This For?

Children ages 8–12 who:

  • Enjoy imaginative thinking
  • Struggle with social communication
  • Need support with expressive language
  • Benefit from structured group interaction
  • Want to build confidence in a safe setting

No prior gaming experience required.
