The final event of this semester celebrating 25 years of the City College Honors Center will be two walking tours focused on the legacies of the Harlem Renaissance in the 21 st century. The tours are organized by Black Gotham Experience (BGX), an organization that “reimagines the spaces directly impacted by the African Diaspora as human stories explored through interactive walks, talks, events, and art. The heart of these experiences are five core stories that revisit Manhattan in 1623 and move forward through three centuries”.
Here is a description of the walks from BGX:
"kuzaliwa"
kuzaliwa is a suite of creative works in development by the Black Gotham Experience commissioned by the Apollo Theater that reflect upon the legacies of the Harlem Renaissance in the twenty-first century. Grounded by physical spaces in Harlem, connections within African Diasporic culture are emphasized noting the relevance of Black creativity and political awakening on the island of Manhattan and its relationship to the world. We highlight Harlem as a space of flourishing Black culture and artistry unbounded by the narrow confines of historic eras. In naming this celebration kuzaliwa, a Swahili word meaning “birth,” we embrace Harlem as a place of encounter and imagination for thinkers and artists from across the African Diaspora unbound by the traditional Harlem Renaissance era.
