Sir Michael Ferguson CBE FMedSci FRS, winner of the Leeuwenhoek Medal, will deliver his prize lecture on 26 January 2026, at the Royal Society in London, at 6.30pm.The Leeuwenhoek Medal and Lecture is awarded biennially to recognise excellence in the fields of microbiology, bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology and microscopy.
Sir Mike Ferguson is awarded the Leeuwenhoek Medal and Lecture for his major contributions in discovery science and application to the treatment of neglected infectious diseases. He is Regius Professor of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee.
In this lecture, Sir Mike Ferguson will explore how science can provide opportunities to make better, safer medicines and diagnostics for neglected infectious diseases.
This will include a description of the complex journey by which new candidate medicines are discovered, optimised and tested, and the international collaborative networks required to span from the laboratory to the patient. Lastly, aspects of the social contract between science and scientists and their public and private stakeholders will be touched upon.
This lecture is free to attend. Registration is recommended if attending in person, otherwise availability cannot be guaranteed. Doors will open to the public at 6.00pm.
The lecture will also be livestreamed on the Royal Society website and on the Royal Society YouTube channel.
