Professor Ismar Volić will introduce key ideas from game theory—an area at the crossroads of economics, math, statistics, and political science—to show how classic scenarios like the prisoner’s dilemma, the tragedy of the commons, and the game of chicken help explain real-world conflict, negotiation, collaboration, and political power.

Ismar Volić is a Professor of Mathematics and Director of the Institute for Mathematics and Democracy at Wellesley College. A graduate of Boston University with a Ph.D. from Brown University, he works in topology and social choice theory and has given more than three hundred lectures in over twenty countries. His writing has appeared in outlets such as The Hill, TIME, and LitHub. His latest book, Making Democracy Count: How Mathematics Improves Voting, Electoral Maps, and Representation, won the Mathematical Association of America’s Euler Prize and was a finalist for the PROSE award.
