🧠Lecture: "The Truth About Lies and Deception: Why We Miss Red Flags"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Megan Dowd
Why are we so sure we can spot a lie—and so often wrong? Join us for an eye-opening evening as Dr. Megan Dowd unpacks what really happens when people deceive those closest to them.
Drawing on cutting-edge research in interpersonal communication, this talk explores how deception is collaboratively managed in everyday interactions, why common “tell-tale signs” of lying are unreliable, and how motivated reasoning and ambiguous communication keep us invested even when warning signs are right in front of us. You’ll walk away with a research-based understanding of how lie detection actually works in close relationships—and why believing someone is often more functional than being perfectly accurate.
Dr. Dowd is a communication scholar who studies the bright and dark sides of our closest ties with friends, partners, colleagues, and family. A former college professor and interpersonal communication researcher, she has spent over a decade examining how people manage intimacy, conflict, secrecy, influence, and emotional complexity. She now works as a business strategy leader and is passionate about bringing relationship science to life.
