🧠Lecture: "The Science of Being in Nature: Effects on the Mind & Body"
🎤 Speaker: Botanist, Mr. Matthew Gaston
We instinctively feel calmer in a forest than on a crowded city street—but why? This engaging lecture explores the emerging science of environmental psychophysiology, which measures how the shapes, colors, and forms around us quietly influence our brains and bodies.
Mr. Matthew Gaston will unpack what happens beneath our awareness when we’re surrounded by trees, plants, and natural landscapes, and how these environments can lower stress, sharpen focus, and improve overall well-being. You’ll learn why incorporating more nature into our daily lives isn’t just pleasant—it’s essential.
Matthew Gaston is a botanist and educator with a B.S. in Genetics & Plant Biology and an M.S. in Tropical Plant and Soil Science. Formerly Director of Education at Zilker Botanical Garden in Austin, he has inspired students, gardeners, and the simply curious through field trips, nursery talks, bar lectures, and live streams across the country.
