🧠 Lecture: "The Exoplanet Boom: 6,000 New Worlds and Counting"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Jack Lubin
In 1995, humanity’s known planets jumped from the familiar eight in our Solar System to include the very first planet found orbiting a distant star. Since then, astronomers have discovered more than 6,000 exoplanets, revealing a universe overflowing with strange and surprising worlds—many unlike anything we see around our own Sun.
In this engaging lecture, astrophysicist Dr. Jack Lubin will guide us through the story of this exoplanet explosion: how we first detected these distant worlds, the cutting-edge methods we use to find more, and what these discoveries reveal about our place in the cosmos. You’ll learn how these new worlds are reshaping our understanding of planetary systems and putting our Solar System into a much broader cosmic context.
Inspired by space documentaries and an intro astronomy class, Jack turned his curiosity into a career, earning his PhD in astrophysics from UC Irvine and now conducting exoplanet research at UCLA.
