🧠 Lecture: "The Egyptian Underworld: A Journey through the Duat"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Marissa Stevens
Join us for a fascinating evening as Egyptologist Dr. Marissa Stevens guides us through the ancient Egyptian underworld—known as the Duat—and the rich funerary texts that map the journey to the afterlife.
Drawing on the Book of the Dead and related underworld texts, Dr. Stevens will trace how myth, magic, and religion intertwined to shape Egyptian funerary beliefs and practices. You’ll follow the nightly voyage of the sun god through this shadowy realm, encounter its many inhabitants and dangers, and explore the Duat’s complex geography—where terrifying demons and perilous gates coexist with paradisaical fields of eternity.
Dr. Stevens, Assistant Director of the Pourdavoud Institute and Yarshater Center at UCLA, is a specialist in Third Intermediate and Late Period Egypt. Her research on 21st Dynasty funerary papyri examines how images and texts constructed social identity for the Theban elite.
Come uncover why the Egyptian underworld continues to captivate Egyptologists and the public alike. Get a drink, connect, and learn at Lectures on Tap! 🙌
