Join us for a fascinating evening as Egyptologist Dr. Marissa Stevens guides us through the mysteries of the ancient Egyptian underworld, known as the Duat. Using the Book of the Dead and other funerary texts, this lecture will trace how myth, magic, and religion combined to shape Egyptian beliefs about death and the afterlife.

We’ll follow the nightly journey of the sun god through this shadowy realm, meet the fearsome—and sometimes helpful—inhabitants who dwell there, and explore the shifting geography of perilous passages, demons, dangers, and paradisaical fields of eternity.

Dr. Stevens is an Egyptologist specializing in the material culture, social history, and texts of the Third Intermediate and Late Periods. Her research on 21st Dynasty funerary papyri examines how imagery and inscriptions defined social identity for the Theban elite. She currently serves as Assistant Director of the Pourdavoud Institute for the Study of the Iranian World and the Yarshater Center at UCLA.
