🧠 Lecture: "Sht, Damm, Motherfcker!: The Science of Swear Words"
🎤 Speaker: Laura Montenegro
Have you ever wondered why “abso-fucking-lutely” sounds perfect, but “abso-shit-lutely” just… doesn’t? Swearing isn’t random rudeness—it follows surprisingly complex rules that your brain already knows, even if you don’t realize it.
Join conversation designer and sociolinguist Laura Montenegro for a fast-paced, no-holds-barred dive into the science of profanity. You’ll explore how swear words work in our language and our brains: their semantics (meaning), syntax (structure), phonetics (sound), and psycholinguistics (how we process and use them).
With training in linguistics, human language technology, forensic linguistics, and language revitalization, Laura has studied how people use language from every angle—and now applies that expertise to building AI assistants that don’t sound terrible.
Warning: this lecture will feature a lot of colorful language. Entirely in the name of science.
