🧠 Lecture: "How America Nearly Wasn't"
🎙 Speaker: Dr. Charley Binkow
As the Declaration of Independence approaches its 250th anniversary, this lecture offers a timely opportunity to reconsider the nation’s fragile beginnings and the perilous path from revolution to stable union.
Dr. Charley Binkow will explore the turbulent years between independence and the adoption of the Constitution—a period defined by weak national authority, economic turmoil, and fierce disagreement over what the new United States should become. From the failures of the Articles of Confederation to rebellions, regional rivalries, and fraught constitutional compromises, he will uncover how close the American experiment came to collapsing.
By tracing these debates and crises, the talk invites reflection on today’s political polarization, institutional strain, and the often-overlooked resilience that has held the country together across centuries.
Dr. Binkow earned his PhD in American history from Boston University and currently teaches American and World History at Loyola High School in Los Angeles.
