🧠Lecture: "Dematerializing Art: Conceptualism and the Question of Art"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Ilk Yasha
Join us for an illuminating evening exploring how conceptual art redefined what art can be. Beginning in the 1960s and 1970s, artists shifted focus from the art object to the idea itself, using language, instructions, and ephemeral actions to challenge long-standing assumptions about creativity, authorship, and originality.
This lecture will trace how these radical experiments reshaped the art world and continue to influence contemporary practice today. From text-based works to participatory performances, conceptual artists blurred the line between art and everyday life, inviting viewers to think, interpret, and even complete the work themselves.
We’ll also consider how these artists questioned the authority of museums and galleries, reimagined the role of the artist, and opened new possibilities for engagement and critique.
Ilk Yasha is an educator and facilitator at New York University and the Studio Museum in Harlem. He has worked with leading New York City institutions including The Museum of Modern Art, Pioneer Works, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Museum of the City of New York, and Brooklyn Historical Society.
