🧠 Lecture: "Conscious Awareness: Psychology, Neuroscience, and Our Mental Limits"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Edward Awh
Join us for a fascinating evening as Dr. Edward Awh explores how much of our rich inner life is actually available to conscious awareness—and how surprisingly limited that capacity is. Drawing on decades of research in psychology and neuroscience, Dr. Awh will explain how precise behavioral and brain measurements show that we can actively maintain only a handful of distinct thoughts at any given moment.
You’ll learn how this basic “online” thinking capacity—often called working memory—strongly predicts broader intellectual abilities and even real-world life outcomes. Dr. Awh will also discuss cutting-edge brain imaging studies that attempt to directly measure this capacity, along with emerging evidence on what we can do to optimize and protect it.
Dr. Edward Awh is a professor at the University of Chicago and has been studying cognitive neuroscience for 36 years. His lab focuses on neural and behavioral studies of working memory and attention.
