🧠Lecture: "Body Language & Beyond: What We Communicate Without Words"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Megan M. Dowd
What are we communicating when we say nothing at all? Every interaction is packed with subtle signals—facial expressions, posture, tone of voice, touch, distance, even scent—that reveal liking, attention, comfort, and power. Drawing on classic research in nonverbal communication, this talk explores the many channels through which we communicate without words.
Dr. Megan M. Dowd will show how these signals help people manage relationships and create intimacy in everyday interactions—and how the same cues that build warmth can also be deliberately managed to persuade, influence, and mislead. Because even when the words seem to be doing the work, another conversation is unfolding alongside them.
Dr. Dowd is a communication scholar who studies how people manage relationships through communication. She earned her PhD in Communication Studies and spent more than a decade teaching courses such as Interpersonal Communication, The Dark Side of Communication, and Family Communication at Hamilton College, the University of Rhode Island, and Ohio University. Now a business strategist, she still loves translating communication research for curious audiences beyond the classroom.
