📚 Lecture: “What Theater Can Do That Movies Can’t”
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Andrzej Brylak
Join us for a captivating evening with Dr. Andrzej Brylak as we explore the evolution of 20th-century theater and its unique capabilities in comparison to film. Initially focused on mimicking reality, theater was challenged by the advent of film, compelling it to reinvent itself. The Polish director and theater visionary Jerzy Grotowski believed that the essence of theater lies in showcasing the live transformation of an actor—a process that no other medium can replicate.
Dr. Brylak will discuss Grotowski’s concept of "Poor Theater," which strips away unnecessary decoration, lights, and costumes to emphasize genuine performance. As we navigate the age of sensory overload, augmented reality, and AI, we will consider why this seemingly archaic art form holds greater relevance than ever. Additionally, the lecture will touch on the deep connections between theater, religious ritual, psychology, and politics.
Dr. Andrzej Brylak is a lecturer in the USC Slavic Department, specializing in Polish theater, Eastern European literature, and Jewish studies.
Don’t miss this opportunity to deepen your understanding of theater's profound impact!
