The Spanish-American War brought U.S. control over Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines, and placed Cuba firmly under American influence—marking a decisive turn toward overseas expansion.

This lecture explores how yellow journalism, economic ambition, racial ideology, and humanitarian rhetoric combined to push the nation into war. It also examines the intense domestic debate over imperialism and the long-term consequences of America’s new role on the world stage. By tracing how a “splendid little war” reshaped foreign policy, racial politics, and national identity, this talk reveals how 1898 laid the foundations of modern American power—and its deepest contradictions.

Dr. Charley Binkow received his PhD in American History from Boston University and currently teaches American and World History at Loyola High School in Los Angeles.
