📚 Lecture: "The Supermassive Black Hole Right in Our Galactic Backyard"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Jesse Han
Join us for an enlightening evening with Dr. Jesse Han as we explore the intriguing world of supermassive black holes. In this compelling lecture, Dr. Han will discuss how supermassive black holes can produce hypervelocity stars through the Hills mechanism and what this means for our understanding of the universe.
By tracing a population of hypervelocity stars back to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), we can infer the presence of a supermassive black hole with an estimated mass of about one million solar masses—a figure that falls perfectly on the M-sigma relation predicted for the LMC. Dr. Han will also cover how an all-sky Roman survey can help constrain the proper motion of faint stars, allowing us to pinpoint the location of this elusive supermassive black hole.
As a PhD candidate in Astrophysics at Harvard University set to graduate in 2025, Dr. Han brings invaluable expertise to this fascinating topic.
Don’t miss this opportunity to deepen your knowledge of astrophysics with the talented Dr. Jesse Han!
