🧠 Lecture: "The Neuroscience of Gambling"
🎙️ Speaker: Dr. Viral Mistry
Betting app ads during the Super Bowl. A new Bally's Casino opening downtown. Prediction odds on the chyron of major news networks. Gambling is becoming increasingly pervasive nationwide, and it’s digging deep roots here in Chicago.
In this engaging lecture, neuroscientist Dr. Viral Mistry will unpack why gambling is so powerfully addictive, what happens in the brain when we chase wins and ignore losses, and how casinos, apps, and sportsbooks use psychological strategies to keep us coming back. He’ll also explore why gambling addiction is a serious public health concern—not just an issue of “willpower”—and what that means for individuals, families, and communities.
Dr. Mistry studies learning and memory at Rosalind Franklin University and teaches introductory neuroscience at Dominican University. Beyond the lab and classroom, he is a passionate advocate for science communication, social justice, and education.
