🧠Lecture: "Superbugs: Antibiotics, Ecology, Evolution"
🎤 Speaker: Prof. Erica Hartmann
Join us for a fascinating evening with Prof. Erica Hartmann as she uncovers how our war on germs may be fueling the rise of superbugs. In our homes, offices, and public spaces, we surround ourselves with synthetic antimicrobial chemicals—built into everything from baby toys to building materials—with the goal of stopping infectious disease. But indoors, these chemicals can backfire, reshaping microbial communities and selecting for antibiotic-resistant pathogens.
Drawing on cutting-edge molecular and traditional microbiology, Prof. Hartmann will explore whether these antimicrobials actually work as intended, how they correlate with antibiotic resistance, and what happens when microbes are repeatedly exposed to them. She’ll also share bio-inspired strategies for designing buildings and products that work with microbes, not against them, to reduce risk and promote healthier indoor environments.
Prof. Hartmann is an environmental microbiologist and associate professor at Northwestern University whose research on indoor microbes and bacteriophages has been featured in outlets including Gizmodo, Popular Science, Time Magazine, and Science Friday.
