Sport is often sold to us as an escape from the real world—a space of passion, competition, and entertainment. But NYU Professor Gina Antoniello takes us inside the world of sport to show why the game has never been “just a game.”

A scholar-activist who has worked with iconic global sports brands and spearheaded reform initiatives, Professor Antoniello brings both academic insight and industry experience to this conversation. Her lecture explores how every match carries deeper questions of identity, belonging, money, visibility, and control.

From national flags and stadium rituals to athlete activism, billionaire ownership, gender politics, labor rights, and fan culture, sport reveals the power structures that shape society. Why are some expressions of power accepted as tradition, while others are dismissed as “too political”?

Gina Antoniello is Academic Director and Clinical Assistant Professor at NYU’s Tisch Institute for Global Sport, with over a decade inside professional sports at organizations including the Golden State Warriors and the Brooklyn Nets.
