What happens to architecture when it’s built from wood, cloth, or earth — and doesn’t survive? What if space doesn’t vanish when buildings do, but instead migrates into other materials?

In this illuminating talk, Prof. Monique Lizardo explores how communities encode spatial knowledge into craft. From Filipino tattoo systems that map topography onto skin, to African-Nova Scotian quilts that grid migration and settlement into fabric, to Mexican ceramics that carry architectural memory in clay, craft emerges as a powerful, portable spatial archive.

Rather than seeing these works as mere decoration, we’ll learn to read them as architecture: examining repetition, hierarchy, orientation, and pattern as a kind of spatial grammar.

Prof. Monique Lizardo is an architectural designer and educator whose work sits at the intersection of cultural preservation and speculative design. She has taught and built projects at Canadian institutions including UofT, KPU, OCAD, FC, VCC, and UBC — and appears to be collecting the rest of the alphabet, one campus at a time.
