🧠Lecture: "Parasocial: The Psychology of Celebrities and Fans"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Patrick Doyle
You've never met Taylor Swift. You've never had a conversation with her. So why does it feel like you kind of… know her?
Join social scientist Patrick Doyle, PhD, for a fascinating dive into the psychology of celebrity culture and parasocial relationships. Drawing on years of research, Dr. Doyle will unpack what actually makes someone a celebrity (hint: it’s not what you think), why our brains treat famous strangers like close friends, and what these one-sided bonds reveal about our deepest social needs.
Along the way, you’ll hear about the “Angelina Effect,” why measuring narcissism in celebrities is a methodological nightmare, and what YouTube videos can teach us about the science of intimacy. Whether you’re a devoted fan or someone who “doesn’t really follow that celebrity crap,” this talk is for you. (Especially you, actually.)
Dr. Patrick Doyle is a social scientist and researcher at Meta whose work sits at the intersection of personality, language, and celebrity culture.
