🧠Lecture: "How to Spot a Black-Coded Character (and Why You Should)"
🎤 Speaker: Jordan Calhoun
Piccolo, Panthro, Demona, Ursula...you can probably recognize a Black character when you see one. But what is Black coding, and why does it matter?
Join us for an engaging evening with Jordan Calhoun as he unpacks how race, identity, and representation shape the characters we grew up with—and what those characters say about us. This lecture will explore how childhood entertainment and pop culture subtly influence our understanding of Blackness, belonging, and ourselves, and why revisiting those stories can be both illuminating and empowering.
Jordan Calhoun is the Editor in Chief of Lifehacker and author of Piccolo Is Black: A Memoir of Race, Religion, and Pop Culture. He has been featured in The New York Times, Kotaku, The Root, and The AV Club, and his writing has appeared in Men’s Health, The Atlantic, and Vulture.
