🧠 Lecture: "Friends on the Other Side: Tales of New Orleans Cemeteries"
🎙️ Speaker: JR Pepper
Join us for a captivating evening exploring the hauntingly beautiful cemeteries of New Orleans—unlike anywhere else in the world. Influenced by European and Caribbean traditions, these “Cities of the Dead” are filled with ornate tombs, personalized stones, and architectural artistry that chronicle the lives of countless immigrants who made the Crescent City their home.
From the tree-lined mausoleums of the Garden District to the lichen-covered monuments of St. Louis No. 1, JR Pepper will uncover the remarkable monuments, their cultural influences, peculiar stories, and the unique preservation challenges these cemeteries face today.
JR Pepper is an adjunct professor of art history at CUNY Brooklyn College, a freelance lecturer, photographer, cemetery tour guide at Green-Wood Cemetery, and self-described “professional eccentric.” Recognized for her work in spirit photography, her work has appeared in Haunted America: FAQ, Vice.com, and Musee Magazine. She is the photographer and author of Buried Boston: America's Revolutionary Necropolis and Buried New Orleans: The Resilient Cemeteries of the Crescent City.
