Join us for a fascinating evening as Arthur Lee takes us inside the cutting-edge world of brain decoding—where neuroscience and machine learning meet to “read” the mind. Over the last decade, researchers have begun pairing brain scans with powerful algorithms to measure invisible mental processes, from how we value options to how we form beliefs and make choices.

Yet these models often operate as black boxes: they can predict behavior with uncanny accuracy without clearly revealing the underlying thought processes. How do we know when we are truly capturing someone’s mental state, and not just a statistical shortcut?

In this talk, Professor Lee will share real-world applications from cognitive neuroscience, explaining how scientists test whether their models are measuring the “right” mental states and what this means for the future of mind-reading technologies.

Arthur Lee is an assistant professor of psychological and brain sciences at Boston University. He holds a joint Ph.D. in psychology and marketing and an M.A. in statistics from the University of Pennsylvania, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at UC Berkeley.
