📚 Lecture: "Art Against Erasure: Memory, Power, and the Past"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Ilk Yasha
Join us for an enlightening evening with Dr. Ilk Yasha as we delve into the dynamic relationship between art and history. In this thought-provoking lecture, we will explore how contemporary artists challenge fixed and authoritative narratives, raising critical questions about who is remembered, who is erased, and the motivations behind these choices.
Together, we’ll examine the works of influential artists such as William Kentridge, Lubaina Himid, Walid Raad, Zoe Leonard, and Doris Salcedo—each engaging with the complexities of history and memory through various mediums including drawing, archives, performance, and sculpture. These artists illuminate history as a contested and fluid concept, shaped by power and policed by societal norms.
Dr. Ilk Yasha is an independent curator, educator, and facilitator currently associated with New York University and the Studio Museum in Harlem. He is dedicated to mentoring arts and cultural leaders from historically underrepresented backgrounds, fostering a more inclusive landscape in the art world.
Don’t miss the chance to rethink history and memory with the insightful Dr. Ilk Yasha!
