📚 Lecture: “Ancient Athens and the Invention of Politics”
🎤 Speaker: Prof. Sydney Mitsunaga-Whitten
Join us for an enlightening evening with Prof. Sydney Mitsunaga-Whitten as he takes us back to a time before politics as we know it. Once, the world was ruled by god-kings who held absolute authority, leaving no room for collective decision-making. In this captivating lecture, we will explore how the ancient Greeks challenged this model of rulership and embraced the ideals of human equality, openness, and the right to public opinion.
Discover the concept of the "polis," a groundbreaking social structure that formed the foundation of politics as we understand it today. Sydney will discuss the ongoing struggle to maintain this new way of life, a challenge that resonates in our contemporary society.
Sydney Mitsunaga-Whitten is a Professor at Occidental College, where she teaches courses in comparative literature, language and philosophy, with an emphasis on the ancient Greek and modern Irish traditions. She is currently at work finishing her Ph.D in the department of Comparative Literature at Yale University.
Don’t miss this opportunity to deepen your understanding of the roots of politics with the insightful Prof. Sydney Mitsunaga-Whitten!
