Join us for a fascinating evening exploring the long and surprising history of dogs in medicine. While recent studies have highlighted dogs’ remarkable ability to detect illnesses like coronavirus and cancer, their medical role reaches far deeper into the past.
Dr. Ashley Castelino will guide us through how dogs have served as healers, disease detectors, comforting companions, and guides for the blind. You’ll learn about the genuine physical and psychological benefits of living with dogs, and how historical relationships with them may inspire new directions for future medicine. He’ll also uncover what this all has to do with global superstitions linking dogs and death.
Dr. Castelino is the Public Humanities Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Notre Dame’s Medieval Institute, focusing on access, outreach, and community engagement. He holds a DPhil from Oxford on extraordinary dogs in medieval Icelandic literature, and his work spans animals, medicine, food, and language in the Middle Ages and beyond.
