📚 Lecture: Monstrous Women, Heroic Men: Misogyny, Translation, and the Women of The Odyssey
The Odyssey is a foundational text of Western literature and culture, and as such, still casts a long shadow, 2700 years later. Different translations depict the many female monsters differently, and while individually they often don't play a huge role in Odysseus's journey home, collectively they reveal cultural norms that may persist today. Together, using several translations, let's examine the female monsters in The Odyssey and how some translations have made monsters of women where there aren't any at all.
