About this Event
Our own exhibition curator will take you on a journey into the National Trust for Scotland’s exhibition Ramsay and Edinburgh Fashion. Using a selection of Allan Ramsay’s portraits of women, Antonia will reveal the crucial role clothing played in Edinburgh’s polite society. You will meet society hostesses and friends of David Hume, see the extent of the trades dealing in fashion along Edinburgh’s High Street and discover how Ramsay offered women a new kind of portrait.
Antonia Laurence Allen is the Regional Curator for Edinburgh and East at the National Trust for Scotland. She has over 30 years of experience working in museums, galleries, and heritage in North America, Canada, and Scotland. With a PhD in the History of Photography from the University of St Andrews and an MA in Art History and Theory from the University of British Columbia, her research interests include the British Empire, Scottish photography, women and Scottish interiors, and the history of museums, exhibitions, and displays.
