The mystery and legacy behind Raphael’s most beloved paintings will be examined as part of “God is in the Details: Clues in the Backgrounds of Raphael’s Madonnas.” The Sept. 11 event will feature a lecture by Linda Wolk-Simon, a specialist in sixteenth-century Italian art with a focus on Raphael, along with 16th century Italian musical prologue of Renaissance Marian music CSU Professor of Music Joel Bacon. In addition, art conservationist Cynthia Lawrence will discuss her work on the painting “Madonna and Child.” Gifted to GAMA in 2016, the oil painting was previously attributed to artist Fiorenzo Di Lorenzo.
The event will take place on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m. in the Organ Recital Hall at the University Center for the Arts. A reception to follow in the UCA’s Gregory Allicar Museum of Art. Admission is free and open to the public.
The lecture will be preceded by Joel Bacon and CSU music students, singing a Renaissance choral work from the repertoire of the Sistine Chapel, contemporary with Raphael. Bacon is the Father Don Willette Chair of Catholic Studies and the Stewart and Sheron Golden Chair in Organ and Liturgical Studies at CSU.
