Join us on Oct. 5th, from 7:15-8:45pm, as Brian Smith offers a lecture on the Great Library of Alexandria in honor of Chelsea Rectanus, founder of Heirloom. Brian is an Egyptologist and was close friends with Chelsea. Since her passing, he has been wanting to offer this lecture and now is excited about the opportunity!
Please read the abstract of the lecture:
"In the fourth century BCE the nascent city of Alexandria, Egypt was destined to become the center of cultural, economic, and intellectual cosmopolitan supremacy in the eastern Mediterranean for nearly one thousand years. At its heart was the commodification of knowledge – the famed Library - founded and funded by the early generations of the Ptolemaic line, the descendants of Alexander the Great. This lecture will summarize the life, death, and afterlife of this institution and the subsequent contributions in literature, the arts, science, and philosophy which will be the template of the medieval Christian Scholastic tradition."
We hope you can make it!
