The arts of Hinduism are profound in their diversity, depth, and breadth and encompass a vast pantheon. Spectacular images of nine of the major Hindu deities, as conceived and photographed by artist Manjari Sharma, provide a starting point to meet just a few members of the pantheon. This illustrated lecture will discuss Sharma’s work in conversation with older portraits of Ganesha, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Brahma, Vishnu, Hanuman, Shiva, Durga, and Kali that are housed in the collections of the Birmingham Museum of Art and the San Antonio Museum of Art. These works hail, not only from different parts of India, but also demonstrate India’s historic reach and continuing legacies in Cambodia, Indonesia, Nepal, and Thailand. Katherine Anne Paul is the Lead Curator and Virginia and William M. Spencer III Curator of Asian Art at the Birmingham Museum of Art. A Fulbright scholar she lectures and publishes widely and has curated numerous exhibitions showcasing both classic and contemporary art originating from Asia. Recent exhibitions and publications include Silver & Ceremony from Southern Asia, 1830-1930 (anticipated 2025), Handheld Landscapes: The Four Seasons in Chinese Painting (2023), and Expanding Darshan: Manjari Sharma, To See and Be Seen (2022). She holds a B.A. from Reed College and a M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
