Harmony is a central concept in traditional Chinese culture, emphasizing peace, balance, unity, and cooperation. From early classics to later cultural traditions, harmony has long been regarded as an ideal way of living and a guiding value in society, art, and daily life.

This lecture introduces Chinese Homophonic Art, a unique artistic language that links images, pronunciation, and Chinese characters. By playing on shared sounds, visual motifs are transformed into auspicious meanings, allowing audiences to “see the image, hear the sound, and understand the meaning.”

Through vivid examples from museum objects, traditional crafts, paintings, architectural decoration, New Year prints, and paper-cut art, the lecture demonstrates how homophonic imagery conveys blessings of harmony, unity, and peace. Motifs such as lotus, lilies, grain ears, boxes, and cranes reveal how Chinese culture expresses the ideal of harmony through sound and form.

The lecture concludes with interactive “guessing” activities that reinforce key concepts in a relaxed and engaging way, helping audiences appreciate the beauty, creativity, and cultural depth of Chinese homophonic art.

About the Speaker

Madam Zhao Hua, a Chinese national from Dalian, long based in Singapore, is a senior Chinese language educator. She has taught at several local institutions, including the Language Centre at National University of Singapore and the Confucius Institute at Nanyang Technological University, and has received multiple teaching excellence awards.

For many years, Teacher Zhao has focused on studying the relationship between images and Chinese characters from the perspective of Homophonic Art. She has collected extensive first-hand visual materials related to homophonic creation in China and around the world.

Deeply knowledgeable about how homophonic art transforms images and sounds into written characters, she highlights this art form as one of the most intuitive and engaging ways to convey Chinese culture, making it accessible to language learners.

Teacher Zhao is the author of Xiéyīn “Huà” Hànzì《谐音“画”汉字》(Peking University Press, 2012) and has delivered numerous bilingual (Chinese and English) lectures on homophonic art and Chinese character culture at universities, libraries, and museums in China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the United States, Japan, and beyond. Her clear and accessible teaching style has been widely praised by students and audiences worldwide.
