Lecture: Dr. Gary Robinson - The Sound of Change, from Baroque to Mozart

Join us for an engaging lecture exploring how the music of Mozart, Haydn, and their contemporaries emerged from a dramatic shift in musical style. This presentation traces the move away from the richly layered counterpoint of the Baroque toward the elegance and clarity of the Galant and Classical styles, where melody and phrase took center stage. Through guided listening and commentary, we'll explore Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and his "Jupiter" Symphony, discovering how these new musical ideas were shaped, combined, and expanded with remarkable ingenuity, all while retaining tools from earlier musical traditions.
About the Presenter Robinson served as Director of the Greenville County Young Artist Orchestra from 1985 to 2016, with additional interim posts between 2022 and 2025. He was Music Director of Greenville's Foothills Philharmonic from 2000 until 2010 and has appeared as a Guest Conductor with the Greenville Symphony Orchestra and the Spartanburg Philharmonic. He is the Founder and former Director of the Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra of Jackson, Mississippi, and has guest conducted university and student festival orchestras. Robinson served on the faculty of Greenville's Fine Arts Center from 1985 to 2019, where he developed its percussion and winds and brass chamber music programs and taught music theory. He has served as percussion instructor at Limestone University and filled sabbatical posts at the University of Connecticut and Furman University. A member of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra's percussion section from 1985 until his retirement in 2024, Robinson has performed as an orchestral percussionist since 1977 across Connecticut, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, and North and South Carolina, as well as with the American Wind Symphony Orchestra of Pittsburgh, PA.
